What is GPU information?

The GPU vendor and renderer information exposed through WebGL.

Updated: October 9, 2026

WebGL exposes basic vendor and renderer information. Where the WEBGL_debug_renderer_info extension is available, UNMASKED_VENDOR_WEBGL and UNMASKED_RENDERER_WEBGL can reveal a more specific GPU or graphics-layer name.

How NetKarte shows it

Check GPU Vendor and GPU Renderer in NetKarte's Graphics & GPU card. If either is unavailable, start with the WebGL field in that card. When only one GPU field has a value, treat the retrieved information separately.

NetKarte creates a WebGL context and displays GPU Vendor and GPU Renderer only when the extension is exposed. If unavailable, it reports that rather than guessing from the User-Agent.

How to read the value

The value may describe a physical GPU, ANGLE, a software renderer, or a virtual GPU. It is the rendering backend visible to the browser and need not match the physical hardware name.

Privacy notes

Detailed graphics information can contribute to environment identification, so browsers may mask it or hide the extension. Unavailable does not mean failure; it may be normal privacy or compatibility behavior.

If no GPU name appears

Check WebGL first: without a context, the renderer-information extension cannot be read. NetKarte checks WebGL on a separate Canvas from the 2D check, so successful 2D creation does not prevent WebGL or GPU information from being retrieved.

Even with WebGL, GPU names are shown as “Unavailable” if the extension is withheld or reading the values fails. Vendor and Renderer are read separately, so a failure to read one does not hide the value obtained for the other. An unavailable result does not prove that no GPU is installed.

Use OS system information for physical hardware and the browser's graphics information for its rendering path. Do not count a name such as ANGLE as another GPU or rank performance from a renderer string.
