What is Do Not Track?

The former tracking preference signal and its current limitations.

Updated: October 9, 2026

Do Not Track (DNT) was proposed to let a browser communicate that a user does not want tracking. A value of 1 generally expressed refusal, 0 permission, and an unset value no stated preference.

Current status

DNT was not enforceable and depended on each site honoring it. Standardization work ended, and navigator.doNotTrack is now non-standard and deprecated. Values and support vary by browser.

How NetKarte shows it

Check Do Not Track in NetKarte's Storage & privacy card. An unspecified result does not establish whether tracking occurs or whether you have consented to a site's processing.

NetKarte reads only navigator.doNotTrack and classifies it as enabled, disabled, or unspecified/unavailable. It does not save the value as a tracking ID or combine it with diagnostics to identify a user.

Notes

Enabled does not guarantee that every site stops tracking. Disabled or unspecified is not proof that tracking occurs. Modern privacy protection consists of multiple mechanisms such as cookie restrictions and storage partitioning.

Not a replacement for consent settings

For example, DNT enabled may coexist with a need to configure a site's cookies separately; unspecified may coexist with rejecting analytics. NetKarte does not treat DNT zero as consent to this site.

Check your NetKarte choice in footer privacy settings. On other sites, inspect their settings and your browser protections. You need not add extensions or weaken protections to make DNT appear. This diagnostic cannot fully distinguish unsupported, withheld, and unspecified values.
