About domains and DNS
What is an NS record?
A DNS record identifying a zone's authoritative name servers.
Updated: October 9, 2026
An NS record identifies the authoritative name servers for a DNS zone. It is also used when a parent zone delegates a child zone.
Reading the result
Enter the zone name in DNS Lookup, select NS, complete verification, and search. Use Domain Information Lookup to compare registration data.
NetKarte displays each returned server name and TTL. Publishing multiple servers is normal for availability.
Limitations
Nameservers in registration data and current DNS NS answers can temporarily differ during an update.
Multiple NS records are normal
Illustrative results ns1.example.net and ns2.example.net identify multiple servers for a zone. Record numbering indicates neither preference nor health. Read Name, target, and TTL per block.
www.example.com may have no NS while the zone apex example.com does. No NS at one name does not mean the whole domain lacks DNS. NetKarte queries the supplied name. For delegation issues, compare the zone name, registered nameservers, and DNS NS; authoritative-server health and parent/child consistency require separate investigation.
