About domains and DNS

What is a nameserver?

Authoritative nameservers that direct clients to a domain's DNS data.

Updated: October 9, 2026

A nameserver provides DNS information for a domain. Nameservers in registration data identify the authoritative DNS service to which the registry delegates the domain.

What registration data shows

NetKarte displays nameserver names contained in RDAP or official registry WHOIS data. It does not treat them as a live lookup of A, AAAA, MX, TXT, or other DNS records.

Limitations

Registration updates and publication delays can temporarily differ from live DNS. Use NetKarte's DNS Lookup to check current NS, A, AAAA, MX, or TXT responses. Agreement between registration data and DNS does not prove that every user's cache has updated.

After changing nameservers

  1. Check the actual registered domain and published nameserver names in Domain Information Lookup.
  2. Query NS for the zone in DNS Lookup.
  3. Check the required service records, such as web A/AAAA and mail MX.

New nameserver names do not make a service work if the new DNS lacks its records. These steps also do not validate delegation consistency across every server.

Missing registration nameservers may mean retrieval failure or unpublished information, not necessarily no configuration. Multiple nameservers are common; display order is not priority.
