What is RDAP?

The standard JSON protocol for IP address and domain registration data.

Updated: October 9, 2026

The Registration Data Access Protocol retrieves public registration data for IP addresses and domain names over HTTPS as structured JSON. Its predictable fields are easier to process than provider-specific WHOIS text.

How the service is selected

NetKarte reads the IANA bootstrap registries, selects the responsible RIR or domain registry, and contacts that official endpoint from the server. A visitor cannot supply an arbitrary URL.

Limitations

Registration data does not prove the current user's identity or a server's physical location. NetKarte respects redacted contact data and does not attempt to reconstruct it.

Read the registration unit first

Enter an IP in the IP address field of IP Information Lookup, or a domain in the Domain field of Domain Information Lookup. Complete any required verification and select Search. Confirm the target in Basic information, then read RDAP / WHOIS registration. For a domain, also check whether Information source under Registry says RDAP or WHOIS. This search is separate from the automatic diagnosis of your current connection.

For IPs, read the target, network range, then registered organization. One queried IP can belong to a larger registered block. A CIDR prefix describes a range, not a measured device count.

For domains, check the registered domain, registrar, and registration, change, and expiry events. A registration update date is not the website content's update date.

When only registration lookup fails

Local GeoIP can succeed while external RDAP fails. An error within RDAP / WHOIS registration applies to that section; it is different from a hidden contact or a not-found result. Wait before retrying rather than repeatedly submitting searches.
