About IP and connections
What is a network operator?
The ASN organization associated with an IP and why it is not always an ISP.
Updated: October 9, 2026
NetKarte's Network Operator is the ASN organization associated with the IP address. It is a clue to the organization operating an address range and exchanging routing information with other networks.
How NetKarte obtains it
Open the IP & connection card and read Network operator alongside IP address and ASN. Your current connection appears automatically. For another IP, enter it in the IP address field of IP Information Lookup, complete any required verification, and select Search. Keep the operator in Network information separate from the registered organization in RDAP / WHOIS registration.
NetKarte compares the IP shown at the top with a local GeoLite2 ASN database on the server. It does not call an external API or DNS service during diagnosis and does not newly persist the lookup result.
How to read the result
The result may name a telecommunications company, cloud provider, business, or university. With a VPN or corporate network, it may differ from the residential provider you contract with.
Is it the same as an ISP?
An ASN organization is not necessarily the ISP selling access to the user. NetKarte therefore says “Network Operator,” not “ISP.” Missing data does not mean that IP diagnosis itself failed.
When the name differs from your provider
- Compare the same IP; IPv4 and IPv6 can have different affiliations.
- Check ASN as well as the name. A retail brand differs from a network operating organization.
- If using a VPN or corporate network, identify who operates the exit.
- For registered responsibility or address ranges, consult IP lookup's RDAP section.
A mismatch alone does not establish hijacking or VPN use. Missing database information and a failed database lookup are different conditions; neither means the organization does not exist.
