Reading browser information

How NetKarte derives the displayed browser name and version.

Updated: October 9, 2026

A browser is a user agent that retrieves web pages and interprets HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Its product name and version can help investigate compatibility and defects.

How NetKarte identifies it

In NetKarte's Browser card, compare Browser with User-Agent to see the identified name alongside the string used to derive it.

NetKarte compares navigator.userAgent with known patterns for Edge, Opera, Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. It shows a product and version only on a match; otherwise it reports that it cannot determine them.

How to read the result

A value such as “Google Chrome 140.0” means the User-Agent matched that pattern. Chromium-based browsers contain Chrome-like tokens for compatibility, so the displayed brand may differ.

Notes

User-Agent can be changed or spoofed, and browsers increasingly reduce its detail. This result is not reliable identity or security evidence.

When the name or version looks wrong

First check the browser's own About screen, then compare NetKarte's User-Agent. NetKarte matches text patterns; it does not inventory installed applications. Compatibility Chrome tokens and reduced versions can affect the result.

For example, another browser brand being labeled Chrome does not prove the application was replaced. For a bug report, include the actual product, its own reported version, and the failing action. This diagnostic also does not establish whether the browser is current or vulnerability-free.
